Trap anatomy
Almost every wrong SAT answer is built one of two ways. Learn to see the seam.
The Digital SAT does not write random wrong answers. On the verbal side nearly every trap is one of two things, and on Math every wrong choice is a specific mistake the test expects you to make. Once you can name the pattern, you stop re-reading and start eliminating.
Students lose the most time on the two-option standoff: you have cut it to a coin flip, you re-read the passage, and you still are not sure. The way out is not reading harder. It is knowing how the wrong option in front of you was manufactured, because the people who write the SAT build distractors to a spec, and the spec is short.
Here is that spec, in the same terms our own authors use when they write practice items. There is a verbal version and a Math version.
The verbal rule: true-but-off-task, or one notch too far
On Reading and Writing, take any hard question and look at its wrong answers. Almost every one is a member of one of two families.
The statement is accurate about the passage. It just does not do the exact job the stem asked for. The stem wanted the function of a sentence; the choice describes a true detail instead. It is correct about the text and wrong about the question.
The choice starts from a fair reading and then upgrades it with an absolute word. The text showed a tendency; the option calls it certain. This is the single most common trap on the hardest items, and one word gives it away.
Family 2 is the one to internalize, because it is catchable on sight. The test takes a claim the passage genuinely supports and turns the dial up: a result becomes a proof, a common case becomes every case, a contributing factor becomes the only cause. The upgrade almost always rides on one of a small set of words.
See one of these inside an answer choice and check it against the text before anything else. A choice that would be right without the absolute word is usually wrong with it.
Both families share a root cause: the correct answer paraphrases the text faithfully and does the stem’s exact task, without adding a claim, a cause, or a word the passage never warranted. So your tiebreak between two survivors is not “which feels right,” it is two concrete questions. Does this choice do the task the stem named? And does any word in it claim more than the text actually shows? One survivor almost always fails one of those.
The Math rule: every wrong choice is your own mistake, precomputed
Math distractors are built the same deliberate way, but the flaw is arithmetic instead of meaning. Each wrong option is the number you would reach by making one specific, common error. The test predicts the slip and puts its result on the screen, so a wrong answer that matches your work feels like confirmation. That is exactly the trap.
A few families cover a large share of them:

Try it on one of each
Two questions below, one verbal and one Math. Before you check, try to name why each wrong choice is wrong: which are true-but-off-task, which are pushed too far, and on the Math one, which slip each number came from.
A study of urban crows found that birds living near busy roads solved a novel food-access puzzle faster than crows from quiet woodland. The researchers noted, however, that the road-adjacent crows had also had far more prior exposure to human-made objects. Which choice best states the conclusion the researchers are entitled to draw?
How to actually use this on test day
You will not narrate two rules in your head under a timer, and you do not need to. The point is to change one habit at the moment you are stuck between two options.
- On verbal,stop re-reading the passage and start interrogating the choice. Does it do the stem’s exact task, and does any word overclaim? Scan for the upgrade words first.
- On Math, commit to your answer before you look at the options, so a distractor built from your own slip cannot pull you off it.
- When you review,for every question you missed, write down which family the trap belonged to. After a few sessions you will find you fall for the same one or two, and that is a much smaller problem to fix than “I make careless mistakes.”

Common questions
Is this really true for every question, or just some?
It is a design rule, not a guarantee about all four options on every single item. On easier questions one or two distractors are deliberately weak, so you will not need the rule to rule them out. It earns its keep on the hard questions, where every wrong answer is engineered to be defensible until you apply the exact test the question is really asking. On those, naming which of the two shapes a choice fits is usually faster than re-reading the passage.
Does knowing the pattern actually help, or is it just trivia?
It changes what you do when you are stuck between two options. Instead of re-reading and re-litigating, you ask a specific question: does this choice do the exact task the stem named, and does any word in it overstate what the text supports? One of the two remaining options almost always fails one of those checks. That is a faster, more reliable tiebreak than gut feel.
How is the Math version different from the verbal one?
Verbal traps are about meaning: a choice is true but off-task, or correct-but-too-strong. Math traps are about arithmetic: each wrong choice is the number you get from one specific slip (a flipped sign, a forgotten factor, the perimeter when the question wanted area). The useful habit is to compute your answer first, before you look at the choices, so a wrong choice that matches your slip cannot reassure you.
What are the 'absolute words' to watch for?
Always, never, only, all, none, entirely, impossible, proves, guarantees, must, cannot. On Reading and Writing, a choice that is otherwise a fair reading of the text but contains one of these is very often the trap: the text supported a tendency and the option upgraded it to a certainty.
