The December 2025 SAT: what students actually experienced
Students left the December SAT with one consistent verdict and one impossible argument. Easier than October, still harder than the practice tests. Past that, no agreement, because most of what students asked us afterwards was not about difficulty at all. It was an attempt to reverse engineer a score from the paper. Here is what the exam actually did, and why the two things students spent the most energy on are the two with no useful answer.

Hard, but not the hardest. The verdict students gave was steady and widely shared: December sat below October in perceived difficulty and above every released practice form. That second half is the more important half, and it is the verdict students give after almost every recent exam.
Within the exam the shape was lopsided. Reading and Writing opened gently and stepped up sharply in the second module, which a number of students found more disorienting than the difficulty itself. Math ran the other way for most people: a manageable first module, then a Module 2 that either turned genuinely hard or did not, depending on where they were routed. That split is why student accounts of December’s math never converged, and it is where the interesting part begins.
One thing was largely absent from December feedback: timing complaints. Compared with other recent sittings, few students reported running out of time. December was demanding in the sense of needing the right idea, not in the sense of needing speed.
Why nobody could agree about the math
One December math question reached us more than any other, and almost never as a request to have it explained. A circle given in general form with an unknown constant, paired with a second circle of twice the diameter. What students wanted to know was who else had seen it.
They had worked out something correct. That question only appeared on the harder Module 2. What they did with the discovery is where it goes wrong.
The Digital SAT routes you into one of two versions of Module 2 based on your performance in Module 1. The harder path carries a higher score ceiling. The easier path caps your score before a single Module 2 answer is graded. Most students know a rough version of this.
Here is the part that gets turned around. Students who saw that question read it as bad news, evidence the exam had been brutal. Students who did not see it read it as relief. It is the reverse. Being given the hard Module 2 means Module 1 went well enough to earn a form that can reach a high score. Not being given it means the ceiling came down early. By the time you are in Module 2, the outcome you are anxious about has largely been decided, and it was decided by the module you found comfortable.
The practical consequence is specific, and most students get it wrong. Comparing questions with friends after an adaptive test tells you about routing, not about performance. If a friend describes questions you never saw, you have learned which form each of you was given and nothing about how well either of you did. The only question worth asking afterwards is how Module 1 went, and you already know that.
The question about which questions counted
The second question students put to us was which items had not counted. The same two came up over and over: that circle question, and a dense science passage late in the Reading and Writing section.
The premise is real. The SAT does embed unscored pretest questions, used to calibrate items for future forms. Everything students built on top of that premise is not.
Notice which questions get picked. They are, without fail, the ones that were hardest to answer. That is the tell. What the exercise detects is not an unscored item, it is discomfort. A genuine pretest question is designed to be indistinguishable from a scored one, because an item that announced itself would be worthless for calibration.
This matters beyond December, because the theory is load-bearing for a lot of students between the exam and the score release, and it does real damage. It converts a finished test into two more weeks of unresolvable arithmetic, and it teaches the wrong lesson: that a question you could not do might not have counted. It almost certainly did.
What was actually on the December 2025 SAT
Math: conditions, not calculations
December’s hard math was not computationally heavy. It was built around stated conditions you have to translate into an equation before any calculation starts. A quadratic described as having no real solutions. A circle constrained by its relationship to a second circle’s diameter. A set of angle measures proposed as equivalent to a given one.
None of these asks what the value is. Each asks what has to be true, and the work is entirely in the translation. This is also where Desmos stops earning its keep. Students reported using it successfully on a rational expression question, where the task is confirming that two forms match. It does nothing for the discriminant question, because the difficulty is knowing what to type. December’s Module 2 was assembled so the calculator verifies answers rather than finds them.
The transferable move
When a question states a property instead of asking for a value, your first action is not to start solving. Write down the algebraic condition that property imposes. There are only a handful worth knowing cold, and they recur every sitting.
- No real solutions. The discriminant is negative.
- Exactly one solution. The discriminant is zero, so the parabola touches the axis once.
- No solution to a linear system. Same slope, different intercept, so the lines never meet.
- Infinitely many solutions. One equation is a multiple of the other.
- A line tangent to a circle. Substituting gives exactly one intersection, so that discriminant is zero too.
- A minimum or maximum value. The vertex, which you read off the completed square or the axis of symmetry.
Reading and Writing: usage, not definition

Vocabulary carried the section, and the reported words were not obscure. These are words a strong reader knows, and students reported knowing them and still being unable to place them. That experience is the signature of a question testing usage rather than meaning. The choices in these items are plausible near-synonyms, and the sentence does the deciding, on connotation and on which word the surrounding phrasing will naturally accept. A student who could define every option could still miss it.
The transferable move
Predict the word before reading the choices, then test each choice by whether the sentence would actually take it, not by whether the definition is close. Studying vocabulary as flashcard definitions trains you for the question the SAT has largely stopped asking.
The form varied more than students expected
A quieter theme ran underneath everything else. Forms were not all composed the same way, and students noticed. Some found one question type absent entirely, replaced by extra questions of another. Others met long consecutive runs of a single type late in a module.
This unsettled people more than the difficulty did, and it carries a real lesson. Prep advice built on expected question counts, the kind that promises a fixed number of items of a given type, is unreliable. What is stable across forms is the set of skills and the shapes they come in. What varies is the mix.
The transferable move
Prepare for the skill, never for the count. If your plan assumes a fixed number of transitions questions, a form that swaps them for inference questions will cost you time you did not budget.

- Quadratic & Exponential Functions, worked as condition translation rather than as solving. Start with the six conditions above.
- Circles, specifically the general form, and what a stated relationship between two circles pins down.
- Right-Triangle Trigonometry, until converting between degrees and radians and comparing angles is automatic.
- Words in Context, practised by predicting the word before you read the choices.

What December tells you about the next one
The half of the verdict worth keeping is the second half. December ran harder than the practice forms, and so does almost every real exam, because practice is drawn from an archive of retired questions while the live test keeps finding new ways to ask the same skills.
So the useful preparation is not more practice tests. It is deliberate work on the small number of shapes that keep reappearing, of the kind December made obvious.

Was the December 2025 SAT harder than October?
By student account, no. December was consistently described as the easier of the two, while still running harder than released practice forms. Treat that as a description of how the exam felt, not of how it was scored. Scoring accounts for form difficulty, so an easier form does not hand out higher scores.
What was the curve on the December 2025 SAT?
There is no curve in the sense students mean. The SAT is not marked against the other people who sat it that day, so a weak cohort cannot lift your score. What does happen is equating: every form is calibrated against its own difficulty, so a slightly harder form forgives a slightly lower raw score and an easier one does not. Anyone publishing a December conversion chart is guessing.
Does getting the hard Module 2 on the SAT mean a lower score?
The opposite. You are routed into the hard Module 2 by performing well in Module 1, and that path carries the higher score ceiling. Students who found the second module unusually manageable were, in many cases, on the path that caps the score lower.
Why did my friend get different SAT questions than me?
Two reasons. You may have been routed onto different Module 2 forms, and separately there are many versions of each module in circulation. Different questions tell you which form you were given. They tell you nothing about how well either of you did.
How do I know if an SAT question was experimental?
You cannot, and the attempt is worth abandoning. Unscored pretest questions are written to be indistinguishable from scored ones. The items students single out are reliably just the ones they found hardest, which is the opposite of evidence.
What vocabulary words were on the December 2025 SAT?
The words students reported were ordinary rather than obscure: imbue, precarious, analogous, unwieldy, subdued, homogeneity, typify. The difficulty was placement rather than meaning, which is why knowing the definition was not enough.
