The November 2025 SAT: a geometry exam, and a calculator that could not help

November leaned on geometry harder than any recent form, and it produced more talk about Desmos than any exam of the year. Those two facts are connected, and not in the way most students assume. The section that generated the most calculator discussion is the one where a calculator helps least, and understanding why is the most useful thing to take from this sitting.

Was the November 2025 SAT hard?

Harder than average, and concentrated. November drew about two and a half times as many difficulty reports as reassurances, with the weight falling firmly on math. Reading and Writing was described as fair, with vocabulary singled out as the one place it bit.

What makes November distinctive is not the level of difficulty but its composition. Geometry and measurement dominated the math conversation to a degree no other recent sitting comes close to: triangles, angle relationships, tangent lines, perimeter and volume. On most forms geometry is a supporting domain. On this one it was the main event.

Alongside it ran the heaviest discussion of the graphing calculator we have seen after any test date, largely from students trying to work out afterwards what they should have typed.

The calculator is a checking tool, not a solving tool

Desmos is genuinely powerful on the Digital SAT, and for a specific band of questions it is close to a cheat code: solving systems, finding intersections, locating a vertex, checking whether two expressions are equivalent. Students who have practised those moves gain real time.

November’s math sat mostly outside that band, and the reason is structural. A graphing calculator operates on equations you have already written. A tangent-line question gives you a point of contact and a slope, and the work is recognising that the radius meets the tangent at a right angle, which converts the geometry into a slope relationship. Once you have that relationship, the arithmetic is a single line and you do not need a calculator. Before you have it, there is nothing to type.

The same is true of the angle questions November was full of. Knowing that the interior angles of a triangle sum to a fixed total, and that a relationship between two unknown angles is only useful if it is independent of that sum, is not something a calculator can supply.

This has a direct consequence for how you practise. Time spent learning Desmos techniques pays off, but only after the translation step is automatic. A student who reaches for the calculator first has, in effect, no method for the questions that decide the top of the section.

Geometry is the domain students under-prepare

Geometry and trigonometry is the smallest of the four math domains by share of questions, and that fact quietly shapes how most students prepare. It is the domain people leave until last, treat as formula recall, and assume will cost them at most a question or two.

November is the counterexample. On a form that weights geometry heavily, a student who has treated it as a footnote loses points across a whole cluster rather than in isolation, and the loss lands in the second module where the ceiling is set.

The content itself is not deep. What makes it costly is that it is the one math domain where you cannot reason from first principles under time pressure. If you do not already know that a tangent meets the radius at a right angle, or how similar triangles scale area, no amount of general mathematical ability recovers it in ninety seconds. It is the most memorisable domain and therefore the most wasteful one to be caught out by.

What was actually on the November 2025 SAT

Math: shapes, and knowing which fact applies

The pattern across November’s hard math was a question that hands you a configuration and expects you to identify the one geometric fact that unlocks it. A tangent and a radius, so a right angle. Two angles in a triangle, so a fixed sum. A relationship between two solids, so a scale factor applied to volume rather than to length.

There was also a run of questions asking which of several expressions would be sufficient to determine two unknowns, which is a condition question wearing geometry clothing. The answer turns on whether a given expression is independent of the one you already have, not on solving anything.

The transferable move

Before touching the calculator, name the geometric fact the configuration is built on. Almost every hard SAT geometry item is one fact plus one line of algebra, and the fact is what is being tested.

  • Tangent meets radius. At the point of contact, the angle is right, so the slopes are negative reciprocals.
  • Angles in a triangle. They sum to a fixed total, so any second relationship must be independent of that sum to be useful.
  • Similar figures. Lengths scale by k, areas by k squared, volumes by k cubed.
  • Slant height. The hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the radius and the height.

Reading and Writing: vocabulary and the supplement

Reading and Writing was reported as fair, with two pressure points. Vocabulary was the first, and the words were the precise sort the exam now favours: not rare, but demanding a judgement about register and stage. A word meaning early and undeveloped is the right answer only if the sentence has already told you the idea was unfinished.

The second was punctuation around inserted material, including one item where a word introducing an example sat inside a dash construction. These questions look like they are about which mark to use. They are actually about identifying where the inserted material starts and stops, after which the mark follows automatically.

The transferable move

On punctuation questions, bracket the inserted phrase with your finger and check that the sentence still works with it removed. If it does, the insertion needs matching marks at both ends, and the choice with mismatched marks is wrong regardless of how it sounds.

What to work on before your next date

November was a geometry sitting, and geometry rewards memorisation more than any other domain, so this list is unusually quick to work through.
  1. Lines, Angles & Triangles, angle relationships and similarity criteria, which carried the form.
  2. Circles, tangent lines above all, where the right angle is the whole question.
  3. Area & Volume, including how scale factors act differently on length, area and volume.
  4. Systems of Linear Equations, the number-of-solutions conditions, which appeared in disguise.
  5. Words in Context, with attention to words marking an early or undeveloped stage.

What November tells you about the next one

November is the argument against treating geometry as the domain you get to last. It is small by share and large by variance, which means the cost of skipping it is unpredictable: on most forms it is a question or two, and on a form like this one it is a cluster in the module that sets your ceiling.

It is also a useful corrective on the calculator. Desmos rewards students who have already done the thinking, and November was full of questions where the thinking was the entire task.
